Serafin Pere&Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 2003 (세라팡 피레 피스 제브리 샹베르땅)

57 ~ 89$

Style:  Soft & Supple Reds

Grapes:  Pinot Noir

Country:  France

Region:  Burgundy

Sub region:  Gevrey-Chambertin

Producer:  Serafin Pere&Fils

Description:  Established by Polish immigrant Stanislaus Serafin in 1947, this domaine is considered one of the finest growers in the village of Gevrey. Second generation owner Christian Serafin has been making the wines for over 20 years by following a philosophy of old vines and low yields.

This wine is from two lieux-dits in the village, one gravelly, the other on deep soil, it is fermented at fairly high temperatures ensuring good extraction of colour and fruit. The wines are bottled unfiltered with good levels of new oak. A wine rich, concentrated and structured, ageing gracefully for many years.

Domaine Fontaine Gagnard

Richard Fontaine is a charming and modest man but even he could not ide the broadest of grins. 'It was the vintage that I needed', he said. To explain further, he said that he considered 2004 a very good, classic, vintage with a good acidity and implied that he felt his style far more at home with this year than many others. Suspecting that Richard had once again been prone to understating, it was with considerable excitement that we commenced tasting. It is no exaggeration to say that these wines blew us away. Quite simply, you must have some Fontaine in your cellar. For sheer quality, terroir definition, balance and all-round drinkability, these are virtually unbeatable. High-fives all round.

It would be fair to say that the Gagnard family tree has a lot

of branches. While all Gagnards in this part of the Côte de Beaune are related, this domaine takes its name from Richard Fontaine and his wife, the former Laurence Gagnard. Laurence is a daughter of Jacques Gagnard, who masterfully guided Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange for decades. The vineyards of Gagnard-Delagrange were divided between Laurence and her sister Claudine, as were those of their grandfather, Edmund Delagrange. Claudine married Jean-Marc Blain resulting in the neighboring Domaine Blain-Gagnard.

Richard Fontaine is a meticulous vigneron. His vineyard regimen is based on the principles of lutte raissonée (literally reasoned fight), which means he takes an organic approach in meeting the challenges

of Mother Nature. Now with the help of his daughter Celine, he tends 20 acres, including parcels in three Grand Cru vineyards and a vast array of Chassagne’s best 1er Cru terroirs. In addition, the family has holdings in a top red wine 1er Cru in both Pommard and Volnay. The domaine produces two-thirds white wine and one-third red. While Richard and Celine never use more than one-third new oak and no FG white wine is aged over a year in wood, the Fontaines are very particular about barrels.

Their longtime cooper makes barrels to Richard’s specs, and they are dried out for at least two years before use.

Dark and delicious. Black cherry, plum and a touch of chocolate flavors are marked by freshness and underlying tannins. Needs a few years for all the elements to integrate. There's nice saturated fruit on the finish. Best from 2012 through 2026...91." WS 5/08

Lucie et August Lignier

After the tragic death of Romain Lignier, Domaine Hubert Lignier was divided between Hubert and his grandchildren, Lucie et Auguste. The 2004's and 2005's listed were made by Hubert, but raised by Romain's widow, Kellen Lignier, who has taken over as winemaker of the newly named domaine. In 2006 we will see the first vintage made by Kellen, who trained at Domaine Romanee-Conti and has proven that she is every bit as capable as her late husband at producing great wine.

There is often confusion about the difference between the wines of Domaine Michel Magnien and those of Frédéric Magnien. Michel Magnien was a grower for years, land-rich with an extensive nsumber of noble terroirs that he inherited from his forebears. His holdings include plots in Lorey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey Chambertain, Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanee. Grand crus include Charmes Chambertin, Clos de la Roche, Chapelle Chambertin, Clos Saint Denis and Bonnes Mares. For years Michel was a grower and only bottle part of his production. Starting in the early 1990s, all of his production was entrusted to his son Frédéric, a winemaker that one French wine critic called one of the most enterprising and innovative vignerons of his generation." Frédéric makes all the wines for his father's domaine, as well as wines under his own negociant label. By law, Frédéric's wines have always been made in a completely different facility. Some of the appellations are different at the two domaine and thus the primary difference between the two names is simply one of grape sources. All of the Domaine Michel Magnien wines are from vineyards owned directly by Frédéric's father Michel, whereas all but two of the wines labeled as Frédéric Magnien are from purchased grapes (but not from purchased must or finished wine). (from www.burghound.com). Frederic founded his negociant house in 1995 and makes many different wines, mainly red from the Cote de Nuits. He also makes white burgundy from the Cote d'Or and Chablis.

A new winery was constructed for Michel Magnien in the late 1990s adjacent to his house, but ancient timbers used in the construction contained bacteria that tainted the entire production of the 1997 and 1998 vintages - all of the wines from these vintages were either repurchased if released or discarded. The winery is now operational.

Magnien's limited primary and grand cru wines are a must for the serious wine lover, but the village wines too are not to be missed.
